Trump Signs AI National Security Directive for Military, Intel Use

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Friday signed what the White House described as a "historic directive" governing the use of artificial intelligence across the US national security apparatus, laying out a sweeping new framework for deploying AI on the battlefield and within intelligence agencies.

Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum on Artificial Intelligence in the National Security Enterprise, "establishing a new framework to put the most advanced, secure, and reliable AI systems into the hands of America's warfighters and intelligence professionals while ensuring their responsible use," the White House said in a statement.

The memorandum sets out a broad mandate for accelerating AI integration across defense and intelligence operations. "The memorandum directs the national security enterprise to accelerate AI adoption to meet surging demand, adapt the best commercial and open-source technologies for mission use, assure that fielded systems are robust, steerable, controllable, and preserve clear lines of accountability under the Constitutional chain of command," the statement added.

Among its key provisions, the directive calls for expanding secure computing infrastructure to support large-scale AI deployment and bolstering the national AI talent pipeline — including through the creation of an "AI National Security Strategic Reserve." The memorandum also instructs the defense secretary to revise existing policies on autonomous weapon systems and mandates annual reviews of AI-related guidance to ensure frameworks keep pace with rapid technological change.

On the question of operational security, the directive requires agencies to ensure that no entity, commercial or otherwise, "can disable, degrade, or modify an AI system that American warfighters depend on without prior approval," while simultaneously promoting collaboration with private-sector partners to shield US AI capabilities from foreign threats.

The signing marks one of the most consequential steps yet by the Trump administration to institutionalize artificial intelligence within the US military and intelligence communities.
